It’s a legendary sword that is said to have appeared from the body of Yamata-no-Orochi, the eight-head serpent. In the film, this sword appears to help Shizuka fight against the Great Demon of Hades.

Yamata-no-Orochi
A divine creature that has been protecting Japan since ancient times. According to legend, Yamata-no-Orochi was as large as a mountain, had eight heads and eight tails and trees grew out of the scales of his body.
